How to wash and care for cotton properly

With the right care, you can help your clothes stay looking their best for longer. Sometimes, a quick iron or a little steam is all it takes to make a piece feel almost like new again. And who knows — something that’s been forgotten at the back of your wardrobe might just become a favourite again.

Sounds good? Get inspired by our care tips for cotton.

Wipe instead of wash

Does every stain cause a stir? Instead of using the washing machine, you can also remove smaller stains with a cloth and a little eco-friendly laundry soap—just apply it gently and don't rub. This saves water and energy. It also protects the fibers, increasing the longevity of your clothes.

Off outside

If a piece of clothing no longer smells fresh, simply hang it outside or in a well-ventilated room for a while to air out. This often works wonders and saves you a laborious wash cycle!

Fresh scent

To remove odors, mix one part white vinegar with four parts water, let the clothes soak for 30-60 minutes, and then wash them as usual.

Tips for gentle machine washing

Always choose the lowest temperature possible to protect the fibers and reduce energy consumption. 30°C is usually sufficient.

This is how things are running smoothly

Most MELA products can be ironed at a low to medium temperature. The heat can also help bring the cotton back into shape. A steamer is a practical alternative to a traditional iron and works especially well for quickly smoothing out creases.

Small damages are best repaired immediately

Check that everything is in order before every wash, and repair any minor damage immediately to prevent it from getting worse. This will extend the lifespan of your clothes.

As individual as you

The best care for every cotton product

Cotton is at the heart of our products — wherever possible, we use it as a single material. So why not have one care guide for everything? Because depending on how cotton is processed, it can become very different fabrics, from jersey and knitwear to canvas and terry cloth. And each one has its own care needs.

Some basic tips for more environmentally conscious washing, drying, and smoothing apply across the board, but certain pieces need a little extra attention. So alongside our care tips, always check the instructions on the care label.

One more thing: many of our garments are made from 100% cotton and contain no elastane. That means cuffs and collars in particular need a bit of care to help them keep their shape for as long as possible.
